The Benefits of Reformer Pilates

A reformer is one of the key pieces of equipment used in a Pilates sessions as it offers many different benefits for every client.

The reformer is a wooden frame that is about the same length as a single bed although slightly narrower in width. Inside the frame sits a flat carriage that you can sit, kneel, stand or lie on, which moves back and forth on wheels, depending on the exercise you’re doing.

The padded headrest attached to the carriage can be adjusted up or down depending on how much support the neck needs during a particular movement, and the padded shoulder blocks make every exercise a comfortable experience. One end of the carriage has a set of springs that can be quickly attached in various combinations to increase or decrease resistance during an exercise, ensuring every client can work within their own abilities.

Above the springs is a foot bar which is the same width as the reformer frame, and it is adjustable depending on the height of the client and the type of exercise being carried out. The bar is multi-functional and can be used as a hand support when doing ‘the plank’, as a foot perch during ‘kneeling splits’ and to push against when lying down to complete the ‘walking on the spot’ movement.

Ropes similar in thickness to a skipping rope are also attached to the reformer and offer two different lengths of hand straps to use during an exercise such as ‘the hundred’, ‘arm circles’ and ‘mid-back series’. They can also be used with your feet for movements such as ‘leg circles’, ‘the frog’ and ‘the stag’. These straps can also be interchanged for other handles including tri-loops, Y-loops and triple D ring loops.

Reformers are widely used in equipment Pilates because they are so versatile. You can push, pull and perch with your hands and feet, stand, sit, kneel and lie down on your front, side or back to bend, twist, crunch, curl and rotate. Adding additional equipment such as weighted balls and flex rings allow you to perform hundreds of different Pilates exercises. Regular Pilates classes can lead to improved posture, core strength, flexibility and pain relief and as every exercise is tailored to your own level of strength and skill, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities feel the benefits from regular sessions every week.
